July 17, 2013 ~ UPDATE  *** via Lovey Loaves *** RUBY ADOPTION ALERT ***
Good evening, all. Ruby received a clean bill of health today during her check-in with the vet. We believe she is ready to go so we are officially making her available for adoption.

Ruby is a roughly 18 week old long-haired red/black blind mini dachshund. Upon welcoming her into the rescue a couple of weeks ago she was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma that caused blindness and enormous pressure and discomfort behind her eyes. Medication and treatment provided no improvement so she underwent a procedure to remove both eyes. Now she is a happy healthy pup that loves to run and play.

Below, you can find the link to the adoption page of our website that has information about adopting with us as well as the adoption application and submission guidelines.

As always, let us know if you have any questions, comments, etc…

June 26, 2013 ~ UPDATE via Lovey Loaves  *** RUBY MEDICAL UPDATE ***
Ruby had her 2-week post-op check in with the vet this afternoon. We were hoping to leave the vet’s office cone-free, alas the cone must stay for a bit longer. Her incisions and sockets have a little more healing to do, but this lil’ Lovey is doing great. She certainly is a happy lil’ thing!

She has developed a skin infection so we’ve got a new round of antibiotics, medicated shampoo, and we’re switching to a new protein with her food to see if that helps. She gotten pretty flaky in spots, mostly around her ears and hind legs.
She weighs 4.8lbs which is exactly the same as two weeks ago. The vet doesn’t think she’ll get much bigger if at all. As always, thanks so much for all of your love and interest, everyone. Your support drives us forward everyday.

June 13, 2013 ~ UPDATE via Lovey Loaves  *** RUBY MEDICAL UPDATE ***
Good evening, everyone! Ruby went back to the vet this afternoon for a recheck after her diagnosis of congenital glaucoma roughly a week and a half ago. After eye drops and medication there has been no improvement in her condition. Her eyes remain just as cloudy, and the pressure behind her eyes is just as high.

So upon our knowledge and research, the suggestions and input of others inside and outside of the rescue community, and the veterinary staff, Ruby will undergo a double enucleation (removal of the eyes) procedure tomorrow morning. We know that this is what is best for Ruby, and we know that she will feel SO much better and be SO much better off once the source of her discomfort and pain is removed. Plus, since she is completely blind already (and has been since birth as far as we can tell) we are not taking a sense away from her by doing this procedure. She will embrace her condition as dogs do, thrive, inspire, and live!

She’s staying at the vet tonight to prep for surgery first thing in the morning, then she’ll have to stay tomorrow night for meds, fluids, and observation, then, given that everything goes as planned, we’ll be able to pick her up on Friday morning.

As always… THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for your kind words, interest, and support. The outpouring of love for Ruby since we started talking about her here about three weeks ago has blown us away. We’ve welcomed nearly 700 new friends to this page since Ruby showed her oh-so-sweet face, and for that we THANK YOU!

June 5, 2013 ~ UPDATE via Lovey Loaves ~ *** RUBY MEDICAL UPDATE ***
Alrighty everyone… I know that MANY of you have been anxiously awaiting news of Ruby after her vet visit yesterday afternoon. Thank you for your patience while we worked to get Ruby settled and comfy in her foster home.

Ruby is roughly 12 weeks old and weighs in at a whopping 3.9lbs. She is a tiny petite lil’ lovey! Ruby has been diagnosed with congenital glaucoma. There is a high amount of pressure built up behind her eyes that is causing the bulging. Based on Ruby’s actions, demeanor, and behavior, no one feels that Ruby is in any pain, although there is most likely some discomfort. The vet saw no indication of any sort of head trauma (which the shelter suggested may be the case). She does appear to be completely blind. She would not follow a cotton ball being thrown across the room, nor do her eyes or pupils react in any way to movement or light. The prognosis for her eyes to eventually appear “normal” is not good. BUT, the first step is of course to try, just to be sure…

Ruby has been prescribed two different eye drops as well as an oral antibiotic to reduce the pressure and swelling. It is unknown if this will help, but it’s the first step. We are returning to the vet in one week for a recheck, and at that time we’ll know more. We are assuming that we are going to end up at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville with her to see ophthalmology.

Many of you have asked, so if anybody wants to donate towards Ruby’s medical care we welcome you to do so. You can donate online at this link >> www.LoveyLoaves.org << If you would rather send a check, please shoot a quick email to LoveyLoaves@gmail.com so that we can provide you with a mailing address. We are a 501(c)3 special needs dog rescue so gifts are tax deductible. Over the last two weeks Ruby has generated an ENORMOUS amount of interest and brought over 400 new friends to this page. If only those 400 people gave $3 each, we’d be able to do Ruby a lot of good. Thanks everyone, and as always we THANK YOU immensely for your love and support. If you have any questions, just ask.

May 31, 2013 ~ This baby is out of the shelter and headed to Lovey Loaves Rescue. Bella’s Fund will be making a generous donation to help with medical expenses but most likely they will exceed that amount since she will need to see a neurologist for extensive testing.. She has most likely had some kind of head trauma to cause her blindness and bulging eyes.
According to her needs we may be doing a fundraiser for her soon.
LOTS OF LOVE AND THANKS TO LOVEY LOAVES FOR STEPPING UP FOR THIS POOR BABY ♥
